What is Cued Speech?

Cued speech is a visual communication system that uses hand shapes and placements in conjunction with spoken language to aid in speechreading and enhance understanding. It consists of a combination of eight hand cues and the natural mouth movements of speech. Each hand shape corresponds to a specific group of phonetic sounds, allowing individuals to visually distinguish similar-looking words or sounds that might otherwise be confusing.

Cued speech is designed to support individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing in accessing spoken language more effectively. By providing clear visual cues, it helps them to accurately perceive and understand spoken communication in various settings. The use of cued speech can facilitate better language development, literacy skills, and social interaction by bridging the gap between spoken and signed language.

The system is adaptable and can be used in conjunction with other forms of communication, such as sign language or oral speech, depending on individual needs and preferences. It is often taught to parents, educators, and caregivers to enhance communication with children who are deaf or hard of hearing.
